Foam Cutting Tools are designed and manufactured by Prima Tooling in Metric sizes for the UK market.
Prima Tooling is always investigating new materials. Considering how it can adapt its manufacturing to suit the current tooling requirements. As well as maintaining its core business values that the company has held for over 40 years.
Prima Tooling were asked if we could manufacture foam cutting tools in Solid HSS. One of our customers could only purchase these tools from a US manufacturer and in two imperial sizes.
We looked at how we could produce high quality foam cutting tools in the UK. For both local and international markets. And in sizes that can be manufactured as a standard size range in mm, as well as a bespoke range.
Firstly, our engineers took an imperial tool and used our computer-controlled simulator. They then adjusted the sizing to show we could manufacture foam cutting tools in solid HSS, with 4 -flutes, from as small as 6mm in diameter right up to 25mm diameter.
Ultimately, foam is a very abrasive material. So the cutter rubs against the foam rather than cutting, which means regular tool changes are required when cutting foam. Therefore, the cost effectiveness of HSS tooling would be a key benefit to any Company.
